Ratings & Certifications

Ratings tell you where you stand. Certifications tell everyone else. Whether you want to know your skill level, compete in sanctioned events, teach the sport, or officiate — this is where to start.

Player Rating

DUPR — Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating

DUPR is the most widely used pickleball rating system in the world. It calculates your skill level on a scale from 2.0 to 8.0 using match results — wins, losses, and margin of victory against rated opponents. Unlike self-assessed skill levels, DUPR is data-driven and updates in real time after every logged match.

How it works: Create a free account at dupr.com, log your matches, and your rating updates automatically. The more matches you log against rated opponents, the more accurate your rating becomes. Many leagues, clubs, and open play sessions now use DUPR for bracket sorting and partner matching.

What the numbers mean: 2.0–3.0 is beginner. 3.5 is a confident recreational player. 4.0 is competitive club level. 4.5–5.0 is strong regional competitive. 5.0+ is advanced tournament play. Most recreational players fall between 3.0 and 4.0.

Tournament Rating

UTPR — USA Pickleball Tournament Player Rating

The UTPR is USA Pickleball’s official rating system for sanctioned tournament play. It is calculated exclusively from results in USA Pickleball sanctioned events — not recreational matches or unsanctioned tournaments. If you plan to compete in official USA Pickleball tournaments, your UTPR determines your age and skill division.

How to get a UTPR: You need a USA Pickleball membership (required to enter sanctioned events) and at least one sanctioned tournament result. Your rating is calculated automatically after each sanctioned event you play.

DUPR vs UTPR: DUPR is broader and more current — it incorporates recreational play and updates faster. UTPR is the official standard for sanctioned competition brackets. Serious competitive players track both. If you are new to tournaments, UTPR will not exist until after your first sanctioned event.

Officiating

Referee & Officiating Certification

USA Pickleball offers a structured referee certification program for players who want to officiate at sanctioned events. Certified referees are needed at every sanctioned tournament — from local club events to national championships.

Certification levels: Level 1 is the entry-level certification, covering court officiating basics and rules application. Level 2 covers head referee responsibilities, including line judge management and tournament administration. Level 3 is the highest level, for referees officiating at the national and pro level.

Requirements: USA Pickleball membership, completion of an online rules exam, and practical on-court evaluation (for Level 2 and above). Certification must be renewed annually. Many players pursue officiating to deepen their rules knowledge — the exam alone sharpens your understanding of edge cases most recreational players never think about.

Teaching & Coaching

Teaching Pro & Coaching Certifications

Two organizations lead pickleball instructor certification in the US: the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR) and the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA). Both offer tiered certifications for players who want to teach lessons, run clinics, or coach competitive players.

PPR: The PPR certification is widely recognized by clubs and resorts. Their program covers technical instruction, lesson planning, court management, and player development. Certification requires an in-person evaluation at a PPR clinic event. PPR-certified pros are listed in a searchable directory used by facilities to hire instructors.

IPTPA: IPTPA is the other major certification body. Their program emphasizes player development methodology and is structured around skill-level progressions. Both certifications are respected in the industry — many instructors hold both. If you are serious about teaching pickleball professionally, certification from one of these organizations is the standard entry requirement for club and resort positions.
